Chessel Bay: Are you ‘Itchen’ to get back out and help tidy the river?

chessel bay supplied RN 600pxWhile there are projects to help reduce ‘nurdle’ and other pollution, litter picks are still an “important part of overall efforts” at Local Nature Reserve Chessel Bay, where a volunteer ‘Autumn Clean-Up’ is organised for October 30.

The Friends of Chessel Bay are hoping for a good turn-out of volunteers at one of the city’s most treasured spaces at the end of Quayside Road in Bitterne Manor.

While the Local Nature Reserve should be an excellent habitat for nature, it becomes strewn with all manner of rubbish. Much of this is plastic, brought in by the tides, which, says the Friends group, is unsightly and a danger to people and wildlife.

Local community contact Rose Nicole, said: “We’re all hoping recent projects, focussing on reducing nurdle and other pollution, have begun to turn the tide on rubbish in the Bay. Come along and meet the team: Josh Beech from the company ‘Nurdle’ [which was involved in a two-day trial clear up of plastic pellets in August] will be there to chat. ”

Meet between 10am and 2pm at the end of Quayside Rd SO18 1DP if you’d like to lend a hand. Volunteers are advised to wear old clothes and footwear, and robust gloves – and to leave your car behind if you can. Under 16’s need to be accompanied by a responsible adult. There are no toilets on site. For more information phone 023 8067 1921.
