Locals may have spotted an electrically-assisted cargo bike that’s currently on trial at Bitterne Park Stores at the Triangle, which is saving miles of van journeys a week.

It’s part of a Southampton City Council scheme that we reported in March 2021, which lets organisations borrow and try out the vehicles to see if they can offer a practical, greener solution for urban transport.
Bitterne Park Stores owner Robin Bluemel said the bike is already being used multiple times daily, both on journeys between the Triangle shop and his warehouse on Belgrave Industrial Estate, and also all over Southampton.
“We are delighted with the bike itself and the scheme overall, which we found extremely easy to get involved with,” said Robin.
“The bike is comfortable and enjoyable to ride, with a capacity suitable for a remarkable number of our inner city journeys (and further afield, only yesterday we delivered and collected from Chandlers Ford!).
“We're replacing at least 20 miles of van journeys a week, with bike trips, but sometimes this is as much as 20 miles in one day!"
The trial is managed by Zedify, a national zero emissions delivery service already used by The Bitterne Box Co for grocery box deliveries across the city.
