In the national news was Chessel Bay on Thursday (Feb 1), with The Mirror serving up a report on the devastating damage caused by nurdles – plastic pellets that enter waterways.

Environment editor Nada Farhoud visited Chessel Bay, on the River Itchen in Southampton, which forms a “collection point for floating debris”.
She reported: “Campaigners are calling for a certified system along the supply chain to ensure nurdles are properly handled and processed. Activists also want the pellets classified as hazardous to force firms to prevent their loss at sea.”
