Southampton City Council (SCC) has said it’s possible the bridge on St Denys Road could be fixed by Christmas.

The council issued an update on the ‘St Denys Structure Partnership Project’ saying they are “targeting” a start date of early “October”, with the “potential to complete” the scheme by Christmas 2024.
In the latest update on their ‘Connecting Southampton – better transport for a sustainable city’ page, SCC says: “Progress made between parties to be able to target a works start date of early October.”
The update explains the council is “looking at programming against other schemes taking place on the network from 7th October onwards”.
“This has become possible through further detailed site assessments which have now locked-in a safe method of working in the proximity of high voltage mains and other complex hazards,” continues SCC.
“The intention remains to reduce the works duration as far as possible, with an Autumn start allowing for the potential to complete the scheme before Christmas 2024.”
We reported last month that it’s estimated work could take up to three months, involve an “eventual full road closure of the westbound carriageway” while electricity services are diverted, and that it’s likely to involve an electricity shut down for “certain properties”.
One lane has been closed to traffic westbound approaching Thomas Lewis Way since December 2023 due to a landslip, which has caused multiple local issues.
