According to council partner Balfour Beatty (BB) the signs have been set up by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), who have to divert cables before what’s described as “the repair of the collapsed wall”.
But a BB spokesperson confirmed: “SSEN’s works are for one week however the traffic management will remain in place for a further two weeks in order for Network Rail to complete the bulk of their repairs.”
They said the signs would be updated “asap” to reflect the overall programme of work [26/9 now updated], although didn’t confirm further details about the traffic management plans..
It's now been confirmed westbound traffic will be diverted to the eastbound carriageway, at least for the initial stage of work, with the eastbound route closed to traffic from the Portswood direction altogether..

Connect It Utility Connections added in a letter to some neighbours: "We will have a road closure in place on St. Denys Road. Kent Road and Adelaide Road will be closed at the
junction of St. Denys Road, to assist with traffic flow."
The council's project page has recently seen an update. It confirms the three-week prediction for the work, that access for pedestrians will be maintained, and that cyclists may be asked to dismount past the works, but little further new information is provided.
BB suggested checking on the project page for further updates.
