It “will introduce a Play & Park destination designed to enhance the local environment and stimulate economic growth” says Southampton City Council (SCC).
There have been various proposals to transform Bitterne District Centre in recent years, with plans for a £30m ‘Bitterne Hub’ development approved by Labour in 2020 but subsequently axed by the Conservatives when they won council control in 2021.
This scheme, set for construction from October 21, includes multiple areas for fun and relaxation, new and exciting areas for all ages, accompanied by “exercise and hangout spaces”, and “Green spaces adorned with trees, shrubs, and seating, providing a tranquil haven for relaxation and park enjoyment”, according to SCC.
"After the 2022 public consultation, it was evident that there was a strong desire for an improved area that everyone could enjoy, as 50% of the respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the current green space,” said Cllr John Savage, cabinet member for green city and net zero for the current SCC Labour administration..

“Our aim with this innovative Urban Green Space project is to develop a versatile area that serves both residents and visitors. Through the thoughtful design of play areas, we seek to establish a space that appeals to people of all ages, encouraging outdoor activities and relaxation.”
Work is due to last 12 weeks.
It’s funded by the Community Infrastructure Levy, a charge imposed on new developments to help finance essential infrastructure like roads, schools, and community facilities needed for growing areas.
