Do you remember highest tides?

junctionsignNigel Cook has emailed about his research into high Itchen tides, asking if anyone remembers a picture of regulars drinking in the Junction pub , standing in flood water?

He says the picture was hanging in the Junction in the 60s but not there in the 70s.

“The picture was dated 1933 by someone's memory, perhaps November. Research in the Echo archives has not discovered the date.

“Also a date probably in 1979 to 1981 when the Docks Tide Gauge system was out of action and a very high mid-day tide, higher than the official record high tide. Perhaps Feb 13, 1979 when Chessil Beach in Dorset got breached?”
