Southampton Children's Information website wins national award
Southampton Children`s Information Service (CIS) has come out top in a family friendly website award scheme. CIS offers free information for families on childcare, activities for 0 to 19 year olds and a wide range of family support services.
The award scheme is run by The Advisory Centre for Education (ACE) and SAGE publications. ACE is an independent charity providing free advice and information to parents and carers.
CIS has a shop and a freephone telephone line and the website was launched in September 2005. www.southamptoncis.org allows parents to search for childcare and activities in their part of the city. It also provides information on careers in childcare.
ACE`s competition organiser Margaret McGowan said: "We were looking for a website which provided information in a user-friendly way and judged websites on accuracy of their information and their potential to empower families".
The judges said: "The Southampton CIS site was impressive. The information it gives is detailed yet not overwhelming - it supports choices. I was impressed by how current the information is - parents wanting, for example, child care in their area, could be assured that the information on the site is up-to- date. I liked the `multiple languages` option; it sent an immediate message of accessibility and openness. I think families would benefit greatly from this site."
Clive Webster, Southampton City Council`s Executive Director for Children`s Services and Learning, said: "The Southampton CIS website is at the forefront of accessible information for families. Busy parents and carers need to get information easily and quickly and that is the standard which has been used to shape this site.
"I congratulate everyone involved in building this website and would encourage families to make it one of their `favourites` for finding out about childcare, activities and working with children."
Representatives from the CIS travelled to London to receive their award on May 15.
