Southampton City Council, police and other agencies will be focusing their attention on St Denys to combat anti-social behaviour and crime, and to improve the environment this week, as the city's 12th Crime Reduction and Environment Week (CREW) gets off the ground.
The week will include all sorts of activities, ranging from rubbish clearance and graffiti removal to fun sports events and a pub quiz.
Overgrown hedges will be chopped back, broken fences repaired and public places generally spruced up. A delicate operation will take place on Friday 21 October when a crane will be put in place on Saltmead estate to recover unsightly rubbish from the River Itchen.
The tricky clean-up, being part-funded by Hyde Housing Association, is expected to heave up everything from bicycles to shopping trolleys, helping to restore the river to its former glory.
Staff from the council's parks and open spaces department will be putting on wetsuits for the chilly recovery operation, which will take place early in the morning while there is a low tide.
Meanwhile Western Challenge Housing Group will be funding a makeover of the children's play area in Collier Close.
The project will also see alleyways cleared, overgrown vegetation cut back around St Denys railway station and home fire safety checks carried out by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.
As well as all the hard work, there are lots of fun events planned to help bring the community together. Local youngsters aged between ten and 15 will be taking part in a five-a-side football tournament at St Denys Church Hall, competing for the Denkale Cup donated by local Chevrolet retailers Denkale.
Coaches from Hampshire Cricket Club will be visiting St Denys Primary School for taster cricket sessions with pupils, while local pub The Junction is hosting a quiz for the local community on Saturday evening.
Cabinet Member for Communities and Regeneration Councillor Liz Mizon said: "This time our CREW team will be shining the spotlight on St Denys. Our previous CREW weeks have been hugely successful and we are hoping this one will go down just as well. Residents are asked to do whatever they can, however small, to help make a difference to their neighbourhood."
